This three-part video explains what dynamic range is, how it affects your photographs, and what exposure techniques and post-processing steps are necessary to take full advantage of it. I do this within the context of a real-world dynamic range comparison between the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T2i/550D, but the results are also applicable for the Nikon D7000 vs Canon 7D/60D/T3i, since the bodies within each family share identical or nearly-identical sensors. The T2i results also relate to the 5D Mark II, as the dynamic range and banding characteristics are similiar across Canon’s crop and full-frame bodies.
